Funny, Angry Monster Hat- Free Pattern

I had some green yarn laying around that I had not used up. I wanted to make a monster hat but was not sure how I wanted it to look. I enjoy making the kitty and unicorn hats. But, I wanted to make some more boyish hat patterns. So, I came up with this Funny, Angry Monster Hat. His eyebrows make him look mad. But it makes me laugh too. Do you like to make any funny hats?

This hat is similar to other hats that I have created. I have a Shark Hat, a Jack O Lantern Hat, and several others here on this blog. All of these patterns are free!

So, to do this pattern you will do the following- (Starting with the green yarn)

Row 1: Magic circle and put 8 Dc in the magic circle. Alternatively, you can chain 4 and then place 8 dc in the fourth ch from hook. Join at the beginning. Chain 2.

Row 2: Dc two dc in each dc around. At the end, you will have 16 dc. Join at the beginning. Ch 2.

Row 3: (Dc two in first dc, dc 1 in next.) Repeat what is in parenthesis around. (24 dc) Join at the beginning. Ch. 2.

Row 4: (Dc two in first dc, dc 1 in next, dc 1 in the next.) Repeat what is in the parenthesis around. (32 dc) Join at the beginning. Ch. 2.

Row 5: (Dc two in the first dc, dc 1 in next, dc 1 in next, dc 1 in next.) Repeat what is in the parenthesis around. (40 dc) Join at the beginning. Ch. 2.

Row 6: (Dc two in the first dc, dc 1 in next, dc 1 in next, dc 1 in next, dc in next.) Repeat what is in the parenthesis around. (48 dc) Join at the beginning. Ch. 2.

Rows 7-13: Dc around. Join between each round. You will have 48 stitches on each round. Chain 2 each start of a new round. At the end of round 13, finish off.

For Ear Flaps- In the Green Yarn (2 of them)

Row 1: In any dc around the bottom of the hat, slip stitch into the hat and ch 2, dc 7. Join.

Row 2: Turn, chain 2, dc 2 together, dc 5. (6)

Row 3: Turn, chain 2, dc 2 together, dc 4. (5)

Row 4: Turn, chain 2, dc 3 together, dc 3. (4)

Row 5: Turn, chain 2, dc 2 together, dc 2. (3)

Row 6: Turn, chain 2, dc 2 together, dc 1. (2)

Row 7: Turn, chain 2, dc 2 tog, end off.

Count 26 stitches from the end of the first ear flap. In the 27th stitch, slip stitch and ch. 2, dc 7.

Repeat rows 2-7 of the first ear flap above and finish off.

Sc around the entire hat. Place 3 sc stitches in the flap ends of the hat and continue to sc around. I did one round of green, one round of white and one more round of green. Finish off.

For the Eyes (Make two)

Starting with the black yarn-

Row 1: Magic Circle. Do 8 sc in the magic circle. Join. Ch 1.

Row 2: Place 2 Sc in each stitch around. Join. Ch. 1.

Row 3: Two sc in first sc, 1 sc in next. Repeat around. Join. Ch. 1.

Change to white yarn-

Row 4: Two sc in the first sc, 1 sc in next, 1 sc in next. Repeat around. Join. Ch. 1.

Row 5: Two sc in the first sc, 1 sc in next, 1 sc in next, 1 sc in next. Repeat around. Join. Ch. 1.

Finish off.

For the eyebrows- In black- Make 2

Row 1: Ch 10. Turn.

Row 2: Dc in second ch from hook and across. Ch. 2. Turn.

Row 3: Dc in each stitch across. Finish off.

For the Frown- In black

Row 1: Ch. 10. Turn.

Row 2: Sc in second ch from hook and across. Finish off.

Sew all the eyes, mouth and eyebrows on the hat according to the picture.

For the hair, I cut about 15 inches of yarn off. I cut about 5 pieces and tied it in a knot at the second row on the top of the hat. Trim the hair to your desired length.

For the tassels- in 3 colors- make two

I cut about 20 inches of each color. I cut six strands for each color, for each side. I threaded the bunch of threads through the bottom corner of the hat. I pulled the yarns half way through and then braided them by color. Do this for each side and knot at the bottom.

Trim all threads and tuck in all loose ends.

That’s It!!

I would love to see any pictures if you try this hat!

Happy Crochet!
