Hello Kitty Inspired Crochet Hat- Free Pattern

Who doesn’t love Hello Kitty? My daughter is 8 and she loves Hello Kitty. I remember Hello Kitty from my own childhood. It is always interesting what trends stand the test of time. I have made these hats before. They are always a hit with little girls as gifts for birthdays and other occasions! I have even made some of these to auction off at my daughter’s school for a fundraiser. They did well! I thought I could write up the pattern. I have looked around before and it is hard to find patterns for Hello Kitty. Especially free ones. So, if you you enjoy this pattern, could you please consider subscribing to my website? I would love to make sure you are able to get the next free pattern!

So, here is my Hello Kitty Inspired Hat!

Second Ear Flap

From where you started the last flap, count back 19 dc. In the 20th dc, start the Second Ear Flap

Repeat Rows 13-19 to make the second ear flap. You will join and chain 2 for row 13.

Change to the black yarn and sc around the hat bottom evenly.

Hello Kitty Face

To make the Hello Kitty Face, you will be crocheting on each side of the project.

Row 1: Ch 12.

Row 2: Sc in second chain from hook and each across. (11) Sc 2 more in the end of the chain.

Row 3: Sc in each stitch on the other side. 9 Sc total. 3 Sc in the end stitch.

Row 4: Sc in each stitch on the other side. 10 Sc total. 3 Sc in the end stitch.

Row 5: Sc in each stitch on the other side. 12 Sc total. 3 Sc in the end stitch.

Row 6: Sc in each stitch on the other side. 13 Sc total. 3 Sc in the end stitch.

Row 7: Sc in each stitch on the other side. 14 sc total. 3 Sc in the end stitch.

Row 8: Sc in next stitch. Do 3 quadruple crochet stitches in next stitch (see note) for the ear, sc in next 11 stitches, do 3 quadruple dc stitches in next stitch, sc. Change to black.

Row 9: With black yarn, sc around the entire kitty face. In the quadruple double crochet stitches, do 2 sc in each stitch. Join at the beginning of the black.

*** Note: Quadruple dc is a stitch where you do yarn over 3 times, pull up a loop, yarn over pull through 2, yarn over, pull through 2, yarn over, pull through 3.

Using the picture of the hat at the top of the post as a placement guide, sew on the eyes, nose and whiskers on Hello Kitty in place.

Making the Tassels

Cut 10 of each of the colors: pink, white, and black for the tassels. These will be cut at about 36 inches. Separate them by color. You will need 5 of each color for each braid. Pull them through the bottom of the hat where it makes a point at the end of the flap. Pull the group of yarn half way through. Then, braid the tassel putting like colors together in the braid. Repeat on the other side.

Making the Pom Pom

Using your Clover Pom Pom maker or other pom maker, wrap the yarn around the maker until it is very thick. I used all the colors in my pom pom from that hat but you can also make it just one color. Attach the pom pom to the top of the hat. Sew it in very tight with your yarn needle.

Sew in all of your ends together and try on your new hat!!

What do you think? Will you try this pattern? I would love to see and hear about it!

Happy Crocheting!

Liz
